The National Science Foundation (NSF) is a federal agency created "to promote the progress of science" and "to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare."  NSF provides federal grants to research centers, groups of investigators, and individual researchers in fields such as computer science, mathematics, and the social sciences.

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation provides grants for original research in science, technology, and economic institutions, as well as to promote education and and increase in the American standard of living.  A variety of initiatives are funded by the Foundation "that it expects will result in a strong benefit to society."

The Population Studies Center supports numerous population researchers in a wide variety of academic disciplines in order to pursue demographic research.
